I'm a newbie. I started at the Octave site for instructions on getting Octave
downloaded and installed, and got overwhelmed by the choices and some of the
notation. If I state where I'm starting and what I hope to do, if someone
could give me a trail through the document list that gets me on the right path
I'd appreciate it.

I'm running Window Vista. I'd like a pre-compiled version so that I don't need
a compiler. Is that what "binary" means in the Octave documentation? I want
to use it mainly for matrix operations, so options for graphics or other
features is of secondary importance now. I'm doing this as a hobby at home, so
low cost is needed. I've had lots of experience with NASTRAN DMAP, and a
little Matlab experience, but I'm truly an innocent on issues such as writing
and compiling code, and installing software. Should I continue looking at
Octave, or would I be better off starting somewhere else?
