I've been thinking a bit about how to bring back this feature as it was also something I really liked. I don't think it would be too hard to add this feature for m-files, but I fear that it will require some huge hacks to get it working for built-ins and oct-files. Personally, I mostly used the feature exactly for built-ins and oct-files :-( My main motivations for changing the release system was 1. Allow maintainers to decide when packages get released. 2. Lower the maintenance burden. I fear that if we add a bunch of hacks to get this feature back, then we will quickly end up in the same maintenance mess as with the old system.
