I wonder what open office developers would say if one would tell them to 
remove a feature because it is not supported in windows?

No one will hinder you from using octave toolboxes with matlab - the 
code is GPL licensed so you at liberty to use it at your own gusto.
You can create a fork and publish 'compatibel ML toolboxes'. That's the 
point of free software.
Just like no one will argue if openoffice is used on windows.

But there is a reason developers are using octave and it's api, syntax 
and feature set, and I just don't see the point to abandon useful 
features that elevate octave over the other brand - just for the sake of 
compatibility.
