Mario,

incidentally, I just lashed up a small .oct-program to output data via the 
_parallel_ port using libieee1284 the other day.

As for serial port communication: The IOPort function of Psychtoolbox claims to 
do that (http://docs.psychtoolbox.org/IOPort) across all major platforms, so 
there's probably no need to do all the work twice, but maybe we could just 
refactor parts of their code.

I don't know if a unified interface for serial, parallel, and maybe USB port 
communication makes an awful lot of sense, since I don't know much about any of 
them, but I'd be glad to donate my code for the parallel side of things.
