I see no harm in having the dependency on the io package and csv2cell / cell2csv seem to be the most natural choices for what tblread / tblwrite do. It would be a problem if io was no longer maintained. But you are welcome rewrite tblread and tblwrite if you think it's worthwhile to remove the io dependency.
