Very true, i spent quite some time thinking about an architecture for this. I'd
suggest to define an API for these "hardware control and config" facilities
first. I'd use dbus for the communication because this gives a great
flexibility for implementing the backends - e.g. you can have a single
monolitic thing or a pile of modules providing this API. I started to work on a
proposal for this but i fear it will still take a while to finish it.
