FYI
I have a simple Win95 network in my office with two machines
and have configured the protocol as TCP/IP. The problem I have had for some time
is that if I tried to access a local machine using its name rather than its IP
then the dialup connection would kick off - when I cancelled it the local
machine would then respond. This did'nt happen if I used the IP address
directly. I spent ages getting this all setup to work with the HOSTS and
LMHOSTS files etc etc ... and still I couldn't stop this behaviour - well I
finally twigged !!! IE4 is set to use a modem connection under its properties
and it apparently decides that if you try to access an internet address then it
should dial out and find it for you. I have set the connection to local network
and problem has gone. I do , however , now have to manually make the dialup
connection when accessing the 'net.
Simple when you know eh !!
