Hi Paul.

I have seen this may times also, and reached the same conclusion you have. As long as you have your connection string to the server spot on in your Delphi App, everything works swimingly. It is a pain however haveing to manually dial out. Anybody got a better way?

Subject: [DUG-OFFTOPIC]: Unwanted dial out when accessing local TCP/IP network.

FYI

I have a simple Win95 network in my office with two machines and have configured the protocol as TCP/IP. The problem I have had for some time is that if I tried to access a local machine using its name rather than its IP then the dialup connection would kick off - when I cancelled it the local machine would then respond. This did'nt happen if I used the IP address directly.  I spent ages getting this all setup to work with the HOSTS and LMHOSTS files etc etc ... and still I couldn't stop this behaviour - well I finally twigged !!! IE4 is set to use a modem connection under its properties and it apparently decides that if you try to access an internet address then it should dial out and find it for you. I have set the connection to local network and problem has gone. I do , however , now have to manually make the dialup connection when accessing the 'net.

Simple when you know eh !!
