We use a product called LaserFax from enesbe.com.au and it is very good.
When a fax modem or fax machine connects to another fax machine, they
negotiate the format in which they will exchange data. When we put in
Laserfax, the most recent fax machine standard was G3 compression, which
lets you transmit an A4 page of text in about 40 seconds. At the time we
were looking (two years ago), toll charges were high and Laserfax was the
only product offering G3 compression on normal Class 2 fax modems, so we
went for that. The other fax software didn't do G3, which tipped you over the
minute mark for an A4 page, so it cost you twice as much in toll charges.
They probably all do G3 now, but it's worth asking about this.
We run two 33.6k Ellcon faxmodems off an NT workstation machine and it
runs very well. Laserfax support intelligent fax boards, but for "hundreds per
day" you would get by with a couple of fax modems. It is easy to integrate
Laserfax and Word with Delphi.
