As a server/gateway installation (probably not what you want in this case,
but good to know of anyway) you can't go wrong with e-smith (see
www.e-smith.org). With this installation (based on RedHat) you can install a
web server with PHP and MySQL and modem connection (dialup and ADSL) and
mail in under 30 minutes!  I use it at home to do internet connection
sharing between 4 computers.

ps. PHP + MySQL is now included by default in e-smith version 4.1 which is
still in beta.
