Hi Colin

We have been running w2k in our development labs for the last 6 months, on
our staff desktops, and soon on our student desktops. I have personally
experienced very few problems with it.

I find it much more stable and useable than NT4. However my previous and
current installations are plagued by 60 or more installed applications, and
the resulting problems [dll hell..]. Given this w2k has not crashed in a
long time, and has much better memory and process handling that NT4. The
networking and plug n play is also far superior, although I have heard tale
of some printers having problems.

We have tried running some Delphi 5 apps compiled on NT4 under w2k - they
have some major errors. We are looking at recompiling them on w2k later this
afternoon - I'll let you know how this goes.

hope this helps!

Subject: [DUG-OFFTOPIC]: Win 2000 problems...

This is quite off topic, hope it is ok....

Just wondering what the general feeling of Win 2000 is out there.

We have started rolling it out to a few desktops... and man... what a
nightmare...

Every PC with it installed crashes far more regularly than Win NT4, our
users have a standing joke that MS got rid of the Blue Screen of Death, now
their PCs just crash (much more frequently) and start rebooting without
showing the BSOD!

And everyday software, like Adobe Acrobat for example, doesn't work for non
administrators without resetting security on various registry keys. (Even a
couple of MS apps didn't work.)

I am seriously thinking of rolling everyone back to NT 4 but just thought I
would see if things are much better elsewhere out there.

(ps. Most of our Delphi apps are ok, just a couple of little quirks with
animated icons...)

Regards

Colin
