I can speak for about 10 of my friends in the Eastern suburbs - none of them are still there. They have all left town, and one is on way to UK. Factors:
-No power, no water -No communications - radio reception is bad eastern suburbs anyway, no internet if no power -Aftershocks are stronger in port hills suburbs - these were better off from the earlier quakes as the epicentre being in the plains meant the shock waves were less in the hills. This time the epicentre was in the rocks and the shaking in the hills is noticeably harder and sharper than on the flat. Only a few people want to stay in the houses with the aftershocks - many are in tents in their yards or bolted from town because its too frightening. -About half the houses in my street have substantial damage, I was one of the lucky ones with little damage other than a hot water cylinder that started leaking. Still don't like being in the house when it shakes though. -Main Bank branches are all shut too. John REFUGEE CITY is the rest of Christchurch -- mainly the eastern suburbs, though there are pockets elsewhere.
