Firstly I would suggest opening your case and pointing a decent fan at the drives so they don't overheat while you are attempting to copy from them. You'll probably need to sort this out permanently since I imagine you're likely to have a problem with any new drives you put in the machine. Try to tie back cables to improve airflow, put in extra fans, cut out or replace grilles etc. > 1) Is there a sure fire way to confirm they are on their way out? You could use Norton Ghost, although it does not like copying from hard drives with read errors so it may not work for you. An alternative would be using "dd_rescue" (sometimes renamed to dd-rescue) from a Linux boot CD.
