Thank you all - I'm honored and humbled by your nominations. I was off on a (much needed!) long weekend vacation down the Baja California Sur peninsula to pet some grey whales, relax in old Mexico and generally recharge[1]. I wish I could say I thought a lot about the OpenSolaris world while I was there, but I was having too much fun learning to 'fly' a small plane and unwinding with friends. (No, I'm not a pilot, but I got to sit in the front seat and hold the steering wheel for several hours :-) I am still considering accepting the nomination; part of my hesitation is that I need to balance my passion for the community with the responsibility I have as a leader in the architecture community both within Sun and out in OS.o. While many could do a fantastic job on the OGB (just see the current list of nominees!), there aren't many who could (or maybe would) stay on top of the ARC world and drive it in the directions it needs to go. If I /were/ to take on the OGB, it would entail my disengaging a bit from the ARC stuff, if only because I believe that "doing the OGB stuff" is going to be more than a full time job for the first several months. I'm also very concerned about the anti-Sun backlash that has arisen - as characterized by the bugzilla discussion around a potential constitutional amendment that would effectively prohibit Sun Employees from running for the OGB[2]. I still don't know if I should run, or simply run away; if I accept the nomination, here is what you should expect from me: > I represent the whole package - myself, my employer, the people > I know in the community, the experience and history I bring to the > table, my biases and my blindspots. If or when you vote for me, > you are voting for all those things *together*. If you don't like > me or them, don't vote for me. But if you do, and if I were to be > elected, I will apply all of the above in each and every discussion, > deliberation and vote that the OGB is involved in. Anything less > would be dishonest - and ethically intolerable. I'm still thinking it over... -John [1] http://blogs.sun.com/katysblog/date/20080220 [2] http://defect.opensolaris.org/bz/show_bug.cgi?id=553
