I had a productive chat with Dennis about the PPC community and project, and I have what might be a good direction forward. Among the things that the PPC project is dealing with, there are a lot of bits -- VM subsystem, booting sequence, system start-up -- that are all fairly generic to the process of porting Solaris to a new architecture. As an alternative to simply removing the PPC community, Dennis and I both suggest renaming it in the hope of providing broader direction for potential projects aimed at other sorts of ports (including, likely, ARM), and serving as a repository of information about these sorts of projects. A potential pitfall of picking such a new name is that others will likely confuse it with the problem of porting software _onto_ Solaris (a la /usr/ports on BSD) instead of the problem of porting Solaris itself. So, the name needs to be clear. Some possible ideas: Architecture Porting Architecture Bring-up Porting OpenSolaris In addition to this, I suggested (and Dennis agreed) that the PPC project should solicit more sponsors, such as Appliances, so that the necessary communication occurs. Assuming we can rally the rest of the community around the idea -- I haven't talked with them yet; only Dennis -- can we potentially get consensus among the OGB members around renaming (and rechartering) the existing community? -- James Carlson, Solaris Networking <james.d.carlson at sun.com> Sun Microsystems / 1 Network Drive 71.232W Vox +1 781 442 2084 MS UBUR02-212 / Burlington MA 01803-2757 42.496N Fax +1 781 442 1677
