Actually, it seems to me that he was acting on Sun's behalf.  From
http://mail.opensolaris.org/pipermail/website-discuss/2007-November/004113.html:

    Sun owns the trademark and Project Indiana is using that trademark
    for their distro. If the folks at Project Indiana or the Advocacy
    community working with them tell me there is a name change then I
    will go change the name.

Since neither Community Groups nor Projects have the authority to make
such a major change to the main page (at most, I would expect that
making an announcement using the ordinary mechanism would be
reasonable) and Derek specifically mentioned Sun's trademark
ownership, I'm not sure what else a reasonable person would conclude.
