What the heck does that mean? >>
I read it as a bit of dark humor wrapped around a kernel of truth.
Dark humor: what if the universe was so perverse that there really only was
one chance for a deal such as Clark worked out? In that case, the success of
S&S means just the opposite of what we want it to mean: instead of proving
the possibilities, it destroys them.
Kernel of truth: the early adopters, as always, court the greatest rewards
for the greatest risks. S&S, Atlas, Green Ronin, and the other early
adopters really do have a market position that others will now have to
scramble to match. Nothing new here: those who brave the frontier -- and
succeed -- always have an edge over those who wait until the frontier is
settled.
