I have had a thought -- always dangerous.
Well maintained, well-publicized 'archive' sites where all material put
under OGL is available for download will have the net effect of encouraging
superior new products and discouraging the gaming equivalent of
'shovelware' CD-ROMS.
If the only place I can conveniently get the 250 new colors of dragons
published in modules in 2001 is in "J. Random Leeches Booke Of Dragyns"
($19.95 at your FLGS), then, J. Random Leeche can make some profit off of
other peoples generosity and creativity[1], while doing nothing to add to
the OGL library. On the other hand, if most gamers are aware of
'www.ogl_archives.com', where the dutiful moderators have posted all 250
dragons, along with lots of other stuff, Mr. Leeche and Leeche Enterprises
will need to go into another line of work -- for example, writing up at
least one unique and interesting scenario to go with each dragon.
[1]To the extent that "Dragon, Red And Green Striped" is 'creative'. :)
