I think I've presented some simple facts. Don't you think
it may be possible you've retained the wrong impression
from an article you read 8+ years ago or that the publisher
was mistaken?
For the very little consulting work he does, he charges
a large fee. But he was not VERY comfortable. Even now
he doesn't own a car or a house or even a laptop. Many
companies balked at his conditions. Back then people
like Dennis Ritchie, Brian Kernighan, Ken Thompson,
Don Knuth, Larry Wall, Bill Joy, Dan Bricklin were
all producing very impressive software.

I snipped those portions because I agree with your
acknowledgement of his accomplishments. I have nothing
to say if you want to praise his accomplishments but I
do have something to say about suggesting he was VERY
comfortable financially for his work on GNU. Misrepresenting
a high profile individual to support your argument is wrong.
But that is the opinion of a nimrod.
