As I understand it, the assumption is that if someone is playing a non-D&D D20 game they are more likely to play D&D because they will already know the game system. So my friend Joe introduces me to Bobo's Generic Fantasy Game, an OGL game that doesn't fall under the D20STL, and after a year of playing that, I move away. In my new town I can't find anyone who plays Bobo's Generic Fantasy Game, but I can find a bunch of people who play D&D. I don't want to take the time to learn a new system but someone tells me that Bobo's Generic Fantasy Game is basically the same rules system as D&D so I start playing and eventually buy a D&D3E PHB. WotC is happy because they sold a book. This accounts for the lag that Ryan mentions in the article. Of course, there is also the fact that the PHB is almost 300 pages of full color, glossy paper with neat artwork and a great layout in a hardback book for $20 which is just a great deal. I'd expect a book like this to sell for $25-$35 from another publisher. Chris ------------- For more information, please link to www.opengamingfoundation.org
