Two friends of mine are running "First Edition" campaigns.  My long-running 
"2nd Edition" game is still going strong.  I routinely see flyers up at 
local gaming stores and posts on the web referring to "1E", "2E", and "3E".

I think Clark got it right - "3E" is here to stay.  Maybe it will fade - 
when all the people that played "2E" and "1E" no longer play D&D at all.
