Chris,
There is an ellusively easy way to handle what you are proposing. The d20SRD is all open game source. Since you _DONT_ want to use the d20 logo, all you have to do is take those things you want to reference out of the d20SRD and paste the right into your work verbatim.
People seem miss one crucial thing. The OGL is the main baby for those of us small timers. What the D20stl is, is an upgrade to that. It boosts sales, website hits and the like because people looking for d20 compatability see the bright shiney logo and go to that site/buy that book etc.
As far as indicating compatibility. Really it depends on the scope of your work. If it's not an adventure, I personally recomend lifting it. Then you don't need to say 'it uses this rule and that rule' because it uses the rules in your book. Just be sure to clearly mark them as being Open Gaming Content. If you're just writting up an adventure, I honestly think that the copyrights included with the OGL would be enough. Just toss some cleaverly worded euphamisms on the front cover for advertizing. Something like "Usable with 3rd Edition" as everyone has been saying.
Hope this helps,
-Bill

|Subject: [Open_Gaming] Referencing d20srd
|
|
|Wow, a lot of great postings today. So many have come close to
|answering
|a nagging concern of mine, but it hasn't been happened with 100%
|certainty, so I must ask.
|
|I have yet to find a clear answer on a how to refer to the d20srd
|without using the d20stl. Perhaps there isn't one. For some of my
|products, I'd like to say "This (game, tool, whatever) is base on the
|mechanics in the d20 srd" or "it uses the same game mechanics outlined
|in the d20srd." I don't want to use the d20 logo and I'm not trying to
|imply compatibility with DnD. Obviously, the main problem with the two
|above phrases is that I'm using "d20", a trademarked term.
|
|I understand and respect WOTC's need for the d20stl, but can we rename
|or provide an alternate name for the SRD? It seems to be a catch22. The
|SRD itself is "open", released under the OGL (or will be in
|the future),
|but the name of it is trademarked. I can use it, but I can't say that
|I'm using it. Perhaps I'm wrong there. I'd really appreciate
|clarification.
|
|In the past people have suggested creative ways to refer to DnD, like
|"3rd edition" or "The world's most popular RPG". But I don't want to
|refer to Dnd, just the d20srd. That's all.
