Ironically, CP2020 is a class-based game. You choose your career (Solo,
Nomad, Corporate, etc.) and that determines your Special Ability (Combat
Sense, Family, Resources, etc.) and the ten or so Career Skills that are
accessible to you. You get 40 points to distribute among the Career
Skills (including the Spcial Ability), then you get REF+INT points to put
into Pickup Skills. Pickup Skills include any skill on the master skill
list that is not on your Career Skill list.
This is little different than the D&D 3E rules, in which you select a
class, and that class gives you special abilities and access to certain
skills. You can buy skills not on the list, but at double the cost.
