I was working in distribution when the "Monstrous Compendium" line launched,
and I asked the sales guy at TSR (I forgot the name) about that goofy name.
He told me that they felt that it was more "trademarkable" than "Monster
Manual." Which I had to agree with. But that's, of course, anecdotal and
certainly not something that will keep you out of court.
