It has to be a "mark used in commerce".  You can trademark almost anything
if you can associate it with a good or service.  "Dungeon Master" is
associated with "Dungeon Master's Guide".

It is unfortunate that games which are supposed to be 100% compatible with
D&D have to avoid using one of the core D&D terms and must use the
euphamisms "DM" or "GM" or "Game Master" instead of the standard term.  The
trademark is absolutely valid.
