I wrote up the following to be a "how to" to writing. Feel free to take
it, use it, and beat it up: this is all in public domain as far as I
care.

This is very good. Just toss in the "IANAL" statement, for good
measure.

Rules for Writing:

The first rule is the most important: Keep a tab on every place that you
put OGC in. If you reference a game rule, give a stat, or
quote/paraphrase/re-write someone else's description, mark it as "Open"
however you can.
>>

This is something that should be very important in the process of
writing. I assume no one writes in a vacuum, just letting things drop
on paper or into their word processor, without thinking about what they
are writing. If in the process, you start writing about OGC, mark it
immediately and continue.

Likewise, to add upon your second rule, whenever something comes up that
you might eventually like to protect as PI (if it ends up appearing in
an OGC section), such as proper names, mark them immediately as well
(you don't want to wait until after you're finished writing as you're
likely to forget about some things you really want to protect). This
way you shouldn't miss anything when you go back through the work. With
that done, you can figure out how extensive those small bits of OGC
appear throughout the work, and craft an appropriate declaration
statement.

I had one project in which I had a number of the minor "useless" pieces
of OGC (useless based on reuse), that were scattered throughout closed
sections. I had them all highlighted. My OGC declaration was simple
(all content in shaded boxes are Open), so I just added a statement that
included them (which were just monetary values, but this could also work
with skill checks and uses of feats).

<<
There are two general ways to mark Open Game Content. Either you're
broad ("all text in this work is Open Game Content") or you're specific
("all text in italics are Open Game Content." "All text duplicated in
Appendix 1 is Open Game Content.")
>>

Maybe it's just me, but I'd replace "all text in italics..." with "all
text in shaded boxes...". The box method seems more commonly used.
It's currently my most common method other than the "all text is OGC".
