There's a very famous case involving an accounting system, and its various forms, 
which was found to be uncopyrightable on the basis that it was basically just a bunch 
of rules and forumuli.

Sight unseen, I suspect that Weight Watchers would have a tough time asserting a 
copyright on such a system transposed to caloric intakes.  On the other hand, who 
knows what's embedded in it and what might or might not be copyrightable.  And on the 
gripping hand, perhaps the old caselaw has become so dated that the courts are ready 
to start applying copyright protection to collections of rules and formuli outside the 
scope of software.

In any event, it's an interesting commentary on the idea that the copyright law's 
application to "rules" has a scope beyond that of gaming.
