Here's a quick question: Are "PCs" and/or "DMs" and their singular counterparts permitted to be used? What about "Player Character" and "Dungeon Master?"

As far as I see it, we have three choices: 1) You can agree on an industry standard that is used by 3rd party publishers that we all use and everyone works together to promote the reason to players so they understand the reason why. 2) Each publisher can use their own in-house set of spells and provide an explanation in products that have the renamed spells. 3) WOTC can make an amendment to the D20 license that also gives limited use of those names. Essentially it only allows the spell names to be referenced in their full title and in the context intended by the player's handbook spell listings (i.e. you may only make mention of the spells within game mechanics). You can't use them within any of your own protected intellectual property or within open material that is non-game mechanic related. You could go as far to say that the spells may only be mentioned after certain types of headers. The named spells would be listed in the d20 license and designated as the property of WOTC. The benefit of this being tied to the d20 license and not the OGL is that the more official products that are collected under the d20 trademark will remain completely compatible and not confuse the customers. The material made under just the OGL and not relying on the PHB loses the ability to use those character's names on the spells. On a really radical note, it would be an interesting experiment to see what would happen if Greyhawk were opened up for 3rd party publishers to work on together in some way. WOTC could have a project director oversee the proposals and approve the content for continuity, then 3rd parties make offers and WOTC gets royalties from them. Greyhawk grows and everyone get to contribute to the setting in their own way. That way all of the work put into those 3rd ed. iconic characters and image gets put to fuller use. _______________________________________________ Ogf-l mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://mail.opengamingfoundation.org/mailman/listinfo/ogf-l _______________________________________________ Ogf-l mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://mail.opengamingfoundation.org/mailman/listinfo/ogf-l
