As I said, I don't know specifically what the issue with DoveCot is,
but if disabling chroot() helps, that could also be a good hint to try.

Perhaps as an alternative to chroot, dovecot can be ran in a zone.

For the component that I maintain (OpenSmalltalk) which is a different 
component,
epoll(5) in OpenIndiana seems to work fine.

For example SUnit-Tests, SocketTests etc. all run fine, and epoll() calls are 
issued.

Of course it is possible that OpenSmalltalk is using epoll() in a way that 
differs from how dovecot is using epoll.
