You may find it useful to have a read through an old post of Larry's http://lists.openimageio.org/pipermail/oiio-dev-openimageio.org/2010-September/003455.html Half-float or higher may be fine, I'd think, which means exr2 isn't a bad option. I've not kept up to date with it's support, but the API proposed in the email I mentioned should be able to support the features needed for a multimap replacement. Cheers, Alan.
