I've decided not to apply this year.

Quite simply, the only people to volunteer as mentors were Robert and maybe
Mikael (both seemed a bit tentative), and not enough project ideas ("there sure
are a lot of iv tickets" is not a concrete project statement).

GSoC is a lot of time and effort for me, especially when filling the dual roles
of mentoring and administering the GSoC participation -- time that could just
as well go into me actually implementing features that people want. (Not to
mention hanging out at the beach.)

To have a successful summer, what we really need is at least 5 or 6
well-defined (and well-scoped) projects that have a concrete problem statement
and design idea AND an enthusiastic mentor paired with the idea who
knowledgable enough about the specific task and has the time over the summer to
dedicate to it.

I'm just saying this to inform, I'm not criticizing. There's nothing wrong with
taking a pass this year; we got a lot out of the program for the past 4 years,
and nothing stops us from participating again in the future.

I'll do a better job of trying to cultivate mentors and accumulate student
project ideas over the course of the next year, so that hopefully we'll be in a
good place to submit an application next year.
