I sympathize, but am hesitant to give up three properties of the current setup:
(1) people don't have to worry about having LaTeX installed, or that their
different LaTeX setup or package versions might lead to a failure to make the
docs or lead to differences in typesetting from the version I see; (2) they can
read the full docs immediately upon download *before* compiling the package or
any of its dependencies, or on a system that is not able to build the package;
(3) I can give a direct link to docs on GitHub (e.g.,
https://github.com/OpenImageIO/oiio/blob/master/src/doc/openimageio.pdf) that
will always be up to date without having to separately upload PDF docs
somewhere from time to time.
Is there any way we can have a compromise that will make things easier for you,
but still distribute the PDF with our package? How about if you go ahead and
rebuilt it every time, even if other people don't strictly have to?
In the link you give for the DFSG, I do not see any rule that seems to preclude
distributing my PDF file. Can you clarify? Which clause do you think applies
here?
