to know which war it is about. You can look at it here on Open Library:

From the related place subjects list you can see "United States,
Confederate States of America, Virginia, Louisiana, ..." so even if you
weren't familiar with the dates you know it is the American Civil War.
If you look at the original MARC data it looks like this:
651 | 0 *$a* United States*$x* History*$y* Civil War, 1861-1865.|
Whenever a Civil War subject is used the place is included. They're less
meaningful when you break them up.
If you search for Civil War on the Open Library subject search you see
lots, but you don't know where they were:
