Regarding the more ambiguous cases of series I'd suggest a little research.
http://shop.scholastic.com/webapp/...Dir=TeacherStore<http://shop.scholastic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/SearchEndecaCmd?langId=-1&Ntk=TS_SI&submit2.x=0&catalogId=10002&NEW_QUERY_PARAM=true&Nty=1&Ntt=Scholastic+Bookshelf+paperback&viewParam=Search&storeId=10001&searchTerm=Scholastic+Bookshelf+paperback&Ntx=mode%2bmatchallpartial&submit2.y=0&N=0&jspStoreDir=TeacherStore>
 and
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=Scholastic+Bookshelf+paperback&x=0&y=0and
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=Scholastic+Bookshelf+paperback&x=0&y=0#/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=Scholastic+Bookshelf+hardcover&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3AScholastic+Bookshelf+hardcovertell
us quite clearly that most of the Scholastic Bookshelf books are
paperbacks and that there is no series including the Paperback information,
unless it is a series with only two editions. And as the last Amazon search
indicates, there seem to exist hardcover books that go by a name including
the (Scholastic Bookshelf (Paperback)) tag.

So the format remains ambiguous.
