No, no breakage when you follow the edits with the usual author merge. The only difference is that the author merge just sees the secondary author as having no works; they are already owned by the primary author record. In either case, the secondary author record still redirects to the primary, who owns all the works. It's just a way of avoiding bugs in changing the author on the secondary works. One clarification: In my experience, if you change the author on a work from a secondary author to the desired primary author, you MUST WAIT the 10+ minutes for the index updates to reflect the new status, before doing the author merge.
