This is a problem without a perfect solution (although I will offer an
imperfect one).
In many cases the author name and surname are obvious, as in "Arturo
Vázquez". But in a significant number of cases, they are not:
- Mao Tse-tung (his "surname" is "Mao")
- Wendy Mao (her surname is "Mao")
- Oscar de la Renta (is it "de la Renta" or "Renta"? Who decides?) see:
http://www.library.yale.edu/cataloging/music/entryele.htm
- Bjork (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Icelandic_name)
Because OL was intended to be easy to update, it was decided just to ask
for the name as a full name, not separated.
HOWEVER, any of the original data that came from libraries or from
Amazon has a name with the surname first, then a comma, then the
forename. It would make sense to me to store those names in the records
even though that might not display on the web page. Your use is one
possible one - more precise output. Also, the original names would match
name forms in libraries and in the Virtual International Authority File,
thus giving us more possibility of linking or providing links.
