Agreed. The change (or decision if that is what it was) was either
before my time or an error.
This might have happened as OL was ported to the IA backend. As I
recall, all of the code changed, and in the re-writing of it all I'm not
even sure where in github the code ended up. I don't recall any
conscious decision; this could just have been a fall-out of that change
(which, btw, Anand did alone and under a strong deadine, so this is the
kind of detail that may not have been taken care of).
