A good solution is the Borg R10 Overdrive which is basically a 6 speed
standard, but that works with 3 on the tree the best. I want a shifter in the
floor. Since I am trying to make it look exactly like it belongs with the
truck, I want the shifter to come out of the floor exactly where the stock one
did. I 'could' live with the T5 out of an S10 because it had the integrated
shifter and its about 2 inches further back than our original, but I will check
out this A833. I just want to get 70-75mph out of the truck. Too bad they dont
make upgrade kits for the original tranny. Both of the above I mentioned bolt
right on to the original bell housing.

The guys over on OldGMCtrucks.com like the A833 overdrive trannies. 4 speed
with 4th being an OD on the right models. Not a bolt in, but neither are any
other options that the original SM420 or SM318 trannies.

Yabbutt ;

I think you want a modern tranny , not some old cast iron lump with a granny
first gear....

Is there any 4 speed transmissions you can bolt up to the back of a 261 and
have the stick come thru the floor in the normal place on an AD? Someone on
Stovebolt mentioned the T5 out of an S10 but that puts the stick back quite a
bit. I want to run highway speeds. Thanks!
