71 CS Grille Painting

I pulled my bumpers to be replated and now have the grilles out to repaint. 
Upon close examination I'm not sure how they should be painted.  The 
recesses are painted black, but I'm not about the sides of the recesses. 
Some appear not to have been painted black and others appear to have been. 
I'm not sure this is just a production variation, but would like input as to 
which is correct.  Thanks.
