As with almost anything electronic (and of shoddy quality) those radios are not made in the US. If it didn't come from Japan, it must be China or Korea. GM just buys it for the best price.

Yes, sort of like what GM has done with their late model stereos like the
one in my Intrigue. The buttons appear to be a charcoal gray plastic with
white letters screened on them. But in reality they are WHITE plastic
painted gray with white letters screened over that. I know this because
the one button I use the most is starting to have the gray paint flake
away. Dumb.
