When I was having my engine dyno'ed, a guy came in with a 70 442 that sounded absolutely wicked. He had his motor built and dyno'ed at the same shop. We got to talking about what it took to get approximately 600 HP out of an Olds BB. The amount of labor to port and flow the heads and intake were about $6K alone. He ended up using a roller cam, custom crank, rods, pistons, and everything on that engine was either custom built or heavily modified. The 600 HP pushed his 70 442 to the low 11's and over 120 MPH in the quarter mile.
The engine work and parts were over $18K......and the car was barely street-able at that power level.
