you are quite right, stock engine with 3" duals will not work.
My set up was to make power in high rpms and it did.
Now - smaller everything will flatten the torque but will take out the high end power as well, right? Or you suggest guys, the we can have the low end torque AND the high end power in the same time? Well , sure, with turbo, nitrous or variable cam timing ;-)

Just remember guys, that 400HP will be gutless anyway... up to 3500rpm or even 4000.

Not if it's built right....

I had a 355 with a nice cam, Edelbrock RPM intake, big Hookers and almost free exhaust. There was not much power ( torque rather ) before 3500rpm and a LOT of > screaming pushing force after, up to 6000rpm. The engine was still pulling strong at 6000 but I was too afraid to follow.

Sounds like you built the motor where the power band was up towards the high end of the rpm range instead of down lower. Your choice of cam, converter, intake, gears, exhaust etc all affect what rpm range you'll make the power.

big Hookers and almost free exhaust.

My opinion is you can have too large of a diameter/ freeflowing exhaust on an Olds depending on how the motor is built. I ran open pipes (cutout before the mufflers) on a mildly built 350 and it ran better times and pulled better when I ran through the mufflers.

The '72 Supreme I bought back in February has a headers with a 3" Flowmaster exhaust system.....stock 4v motor.....no get up and go until it hits the higher rpms. Most likely I'll be putting my old 2 1/4" dual exahust set-up on this car.

Just my opinion,
Randy

Twice maybe I pulled up to
6500 and nothing has broken, but it was a play with gunpowder with stock pistons and stock oiling system - well, heads had a carefully polished channel and nicely ported the oil returns...

I'd love to know the specs on a 350 engine that makes 400HP. Sometime during the summer I'll be taking my 350 down to the engine shop for a rebuild, and
400HP sounds pretty darn cool.

Of course, given the gutless wonder that it was PRIOR to removing it from
the car, 300HP sounds pretty darn good too...
