Yes you are right on the older system with the fan off running the compressor is not good and evaporator freezing is possible even likely to Joe and others. you can not gharge liquid into a running A/C system where the liquid will reach the compressor without causing damage. I was taught to hold the can upside down for gas. That includes the 30lb charge drum which has handles on it designed to hold the thing upside down with the charge hose attached. I still use R-12 in my cars and charge them as necessary with the 30lb drum upside down have never had a problem.
