Apologies if this has already been answered, but according to the owner's manual on my '70 Cutlass, the compressor stays on one the controls are set to "AC" until you slide the lever all the way to "OFF" or turn off the ignition. Until I read that, I thought that my AC clutch relay was sticking, but it's done that way so that you can run the AC compressor for dehumidifying air when using the defroster (like many new cars do without telling you.) Is this perhaps the case with your car? When you say you turn the AC off, are you just sliding to vent or defrost, or are you going all the way to OFF, then back to whatever you want?

Subject: AC Question

I was hoping that someone with some knowledge on the AC system that is on my 69 Vista could be of some help. I just had a new compressor installed at
the local shop and had the system recharged. Today I found out while
driving that when I put the AC on, I can't turn it back off until I turn off the car. The compressor engages when it is supposed to from the controls in the car, but then it won't disengage until I turn the car off. I tried turning it off from the controls in the car and once it is turned on, there
is 12 volt power going to the compressor until the key is turned off,
whether the I put the controls to AC or defrost or to heat. Is this the way the system is supposed to work, or do I have a relay of some sort that is bad or something else? Please help. I burned a lot of extra gas today for no reason while the compressor was engaged and didn't realize the problem until I got home. Also, I recharged it with the R-12a refrigerant that is compatible with new and old systems without changing seals and O- rings and it didn't seem very cool. I havn't stuck a thermometer in the vent, but what sort of reading should I be looking for with this refrigerant. I have
heard it is no where near as cold as the original R-12 but was just
wondering what sort of temperature I should get out of the vent. Thanks for
any help.
