A clutch fan works in two ways. A thermal type which locks up when bimetal spring heats up and locks it in. that type will sound loud when accelerating if engine temp is above 220 deg

The other type is a rpm type it engages at idle but disengages at high rpm

my question, how do you check to see if a clutch fan is bad?

Just listen to it. If it sounds like a jet plane is taking off when you accelerate, it's bad.
