busted mine in half removing it when it didnt need to in the first place.

The problem is, I hope, you are calling the bolt you need by the wrong name.
There is no "pinion retaining bolt."

Maybe he means the pinion shaft lock screw? If you are lucky, it uses
the same one as most later GM rear ends. Most dealer parts departments
should have them in stock. I can recall calling around to find one
years ago. The parts counter guy's response to my question was "Oh,
yea, the one that always breaks. I've got 'em on the shelf."
