Wes, Chris and List.:
The latest info on the demo of Bld.70 Oldsmobile administration bldg.
a.k.a. (The Ivory Tower) is, it will be taken down during the 1st. quarter
of 2007. The delay has been due to the 4 million it will cost to do it .
When built, the structural steel and heating system were sprayed with a fire
retardant containing asbestos. Consequently demolition will require special
processing. The total plant site demolition is scheduled to be completed by
July of 2007.
Dan Ridenour a facilities engineer is looking into any possibility of
removing the letters from the penthouse portion of the roof and bringing
them to ground level through the building. Otherwise a crane would be needed
to take them down. The set of letters on the north side of the penthouse are
crane accessible from the street. The letters on the south side of the
penthouse will have to be lifted over the penthouse and then to the ground
level. This is because the new Cadillac Grand River Assembly plant is
adjacent to the south side of the building. Our local OCA chapter is trying
to get someone to donate manpower and materials to get the letters removed
with at least one set going to the R.E.Olds. museum here in Lansing.
