Well, I can only speak for myself here, but I have learned a lot from list
members in my years of both active participation and sitting on the side
observing the action. Many of the long timers on the list will remember the
"good ole days" when we had fussin' and fuedin' and loads of posts daily, but I
am sure Greg WON'T remember them quite so favorably as the
referee/sheriff/moderator/caretaker of children he was at the time. I suspect
one of the reasons the list has died down a bit is well known to all here, the
fact that GM (aka mafiaoso hitmen/women) killed one of the oldest continuously
produced cars without much more than a whimper of an effort to salvage the good
parts..... While we are now looking at retro Camaros, Challengers, GTO,
Mustangs, Chargers (ugh, the car gawds never meant for them to be 4 doored I'm
sure), and others of like ilk, I am sure none of us realistically expect to
EVER see another updated, GM built version of the Cutlass, the 442 or the king
of the Oldsmobile hill, the Hurst Olds. After all, they are going so far as to
tear down the entire manufacturing facility in Lansing, so I guess it can't get
much more definite than that, huh? Speaking of which, I had occasion to make a
two day run to Lansing last summer, and I'm going to tell you, it was really
neat to see the Olds name and to drive by the facilities. As luck would have
it, I got lost up there while looking for my lodging or restaurants or
whatever, and just happened to drive by the Olds plant. Talk about karma,
circumstance or what have you, I really loved that part of the trip. The car I
drove up there was acting up somewhat as the distributor moved somehow or
another (as I later found out), so I didn't go on too many side trips, but the
few I did go one were very interesting. Anyway, the one thing that struck me
the quickest was how deserted the whole area was for the most in downtown
Lansing, and how little new development and restoration was going on in the
area. It made the realization of the impact a move like the closing of the
plant on the area really so obvious it was painful, and that was just me as an
observer, not a local person affected...... A really nice area it seemed to me
though....
