Although I could ask Dave privately, I figure there might be others who
could benefit from a public discussion.
Works for me...
I have decided that Dave's audio installation (nicely documented at
http://pages.cthome.net/davecullen/delta_audio_install.htm#audioinstall
is a wonderful model, and I intend to do something similar to my 86 Custom
Cruiser.
My install is limited by the Delta's armrest. I decided that I would not cut
into it, so 5-1/4" was the biggest I could fit. In retrospect I wish I'd bit
the bullet and gone with 6-1/2. My current front stage is Kicker 5-1/4
components in the doors running off an amp and Boston Acoustics 3-1/2's in
the dash off the front HU channels.
I've already replaced the rear 4x10 speakers. They're an odd size, but
they mount right on the D-pillar, and there's not enough room for proper
6x9s. At least the new Polks that I installed are terrific, and they
sound a million times better than the GM paper speakers.
Rears become almost unnecessary when the front stage is done right. Just a
bit of fill.
Dave, how did you cut the front doors to do your installation? By the
picture, I surmise that you measured carefully and cut the door panel with
tinsnips, but how did you cut the metal door?
I borrowed an air powered sheetmetal "nibbler". In the location I chose the
door gets double thick (welded seams) that the nibbler couldn't handle so I
used a jig saw. Supplimented with tin snips, a Dremmel cutoff wheel, die
grinder and anything else I could press into service.
I may find myself wishing for an air compressor and appropriate cutting
tools on this job....
Honestly you should be able to do most of it with a jigsaw. I needed
precision because there's no room for error if I wanted the speaker grille
to clear the armrest. I started by drilling the speaker mounting screw holes
with the door panel fully in place so I knew everything would line up
afterward.
