Dear Contributors: Sorry to miss most of today's meeting. I love the business (women in the market) simulation games for Haiti.
Wanted to provide updates on Eshibinga project , supplied with 2 XOs in June, and going strong. A great candidate for a few more XOs. Sydney (a student) wrote a lovely article earlier about how this is really a personal computer after taking videos of his father who is ill. Teachers in Kenya may be on strike but these students are still learning thanks to their XO laptops! Here is the latest this amazing group has proposed: http://eshibinga.wordpress.com/2011/09/15/xo-laptops-takes-on-to-teach-health-education/ The jigger crisis has increasingly become an area of critical concern not only for Eshibinga community but also to the larger community. It is a health issue that seems to be an obstacle to effective learning, brings discomfort and takes away the esteem of the students. The Eshibinga communinity has decided to use the XO laptops to enlighten the masses on issues sorrounding hygiene. The teachers led by Peter Amunga are designing a framework that will address this issue. stay tuned! This project is supported by Jane Wanju Bromberg of Webster MA ( a native Kenyan) and the on-site team leader is Peter Amunga. 1. XO Educational Game Dev for Haiti - Charlotte, NC http://rt.laptop.org/Ticket/Display.html?id=88706 SPECIFIC SITE NEEDS TO BE POSTED OFF http://olpcMAP.net & http://j.mp/6UhCtd Requests 4 XOs over 12 months Project Objectives: The overall objective of this project is to develop a suite of games that can be deployed on existing XO's throughout Haiti. These games will be culturally-situated and will focus on educational content that is both relevant and applicable to Haitian culture. A primary focus of the developed games will be logical and computational thinking, with an emphasis on understanding, retaining, and following sequential instructions. Of particular interest to us is the creation of a business simulation game that will be centered around the ti machann (market women) who are often believed to be the soul of Haiti's economy. This game will allow the player to experiment with running and growing a business, utilizing microcredit loans, budgeting, hiring employees, etc. in an environment where it is okay to fail. We hope to deploy this particular project to the young women who are will participate in the High Hopes Haiti project, which is being established by Mothering Across Continents. Additional games will focus on math, science, and geography. A secondary objective will be to form a lasting partnership with educational providers throughout the country so we can continue to develop and deploy effective and meaningful XO projects for the children and also evaluate the success (or failure) of our work. Our specific objectives are: - To create 3-5 educational games that are sensitive to the cultural and economic conditions in Haiti - To deploy these games on XO's currently in Haiti and - To seek out methods of acquiring and deploying additional XO's in Haiti - Providing UNCC computer science students with additional opportunities for game development and outreach 2.
